Civil War Letters, 1863-1865.

The collection consists of 12 Civil War letters from Werking to his wife, Rebecca, 1863-1865, living in New Lancaster and Duck Creek, Indiana. The letters give a good description of daily army life, and include discussions about lack of regular pay and having to forage for food. There are comments on local gossip, news of other area soldiers, and his business. The letters also show the hardships put upon soldiers' wives at home. The letters were written from Tennessee, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and Evansville, Ind., where he was hospitalized over Christmas, 1863, to recover from a wound.

Werking was born in Emmitsburg, Md. He lived in New Lancaster, Tipton County, Ind., and in Duck Creek, Montgomery County, Ind.
